What Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Can Do for You and Your Skin
Laser treatments are becoming more and more popular for treating a variety of skin problems. One reason for this is that laser treatments provide a non-invasive alternative to more aggressive skin treatments, with less down time. But with so many different types of laser treatments out there, it can be hard to know where to start, or which one is right for you and your skin.
Fractional Laser works by breaking up a single laser beam into an array of smaller, narrow microbeams of light. These microbeams penetrate just below the superficial layer of the skin, creating microcolumns of heat. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process and encourages collagen production to replace sun-damaged and aging cells to give your skin a healthier, more youthful glow. The skin surrounding the microcolumns of heat is left untreated, which reduces risk and allows for a much faster recovery.
The fractional laser reduces the appearance of:
Signs of aging
Sun damage
Discolouration
Scars
It’s important to point out that these things can never be completely erased – aging is a natural part of life. However, you will notice a dramatic difference in your skin in as little as a few days.
Am I A Good Candidate for Fractional Laser Treatment?
Fractional Laser is an ideal treatment for a variety of skin concerns. Not only that, but it can be performed on most skin types.
If you suffer from any of the following, this could be the perfect option for you:
Wrinkles
Surgical scars
Acne scars
Scars due to accident or injury
Hyperpigmentation
Sunspots
It’s important to remember that Fractional Laser won’t transform or reshape your face. It is also not ideal for active acne. If the treatment area has an open wound or infection, it may be a good idea to postpone treatment for now.
However, if you are able to maintain realistic expectations about what this treatment can do for you, you’re likely the perfect candidate! Your doctor will be able to address any other questions or concerns you may have during your consultation.
What to Expect: Pain, Time & Results
The first question most people ask about any laser skin resurfacing treatment is an obvious one: Will it hurt? You will probably feel a little discomfort during your Fractional Laser treatment, but most patients find it quite tolerable.
The Fractional Laser’s cooling system will continuously cool the area being treated, which makes it a much more comfortable experience. Sometimes, a topical numbing cream may be applied for additional comfort.
To achieve the maximum benefit of Fractional Laser treatment, you will need a bit of patience. Depending on the issue being treated, it could take up to four treatments performed one month apart to see the best results. One session could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. For instance, a full face usually takes around 60 minutes.
All in all, results can last for up to a year, depending on your skin type and how well you take care of it. Many patients begin to see dramatic changes after only a few days. To see the full effect, it could take up to three months – that all depends on your body’s natural healing process!
Aftercare Tips to Keep in Mind:
As far as downtime goes, Fractional Laser is one of the most convenient laser resurfacing options because you should be able to return to work, or resume normal activities, after a day or two.
More aggressive forms of treatment (for example, a large treatment area or treatment on a surgical scar) will take several days to fully heal. The amount of downtime you will need ultimately depends on your skin. This is another thing that would be best discussed during your consultation!
During the first 24 hours after treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned. It will look very red, but the redness should fade after 24 to 48 hours. Your skin may flake or exfoliate a little during the first week. If you have a wedding, family photo session, or other event planned, you should allow two weeks or so, just to be safe.
This may sound slightly daunting, but there are several simple ways to speed up the healing process and minimize side-effects from home:
1. Ice
To relieve that uncomfortable “sunburn” feeling immediately after treatment, ice wrapped in a towel can be applied to the treatment area for up to 10 minutes per hour for the first five to six hours. After that, the feeling should have mostly dissipated.
2. Moisturize
Although flaking and exfoliating is actually a sign that your skin is healing and shedding the old, damaged cells, it’s understandable that this is not a look you want to rock for work or other events. Moisturizer can be used to curb this, but make sure it’s unscented. Scented products can irritate the skin and slow down the healing process.
3. Avoid Harsh Skincare Products
Mineral makeup can be worn to reduce the appearance of redness after 24 hours. Most makeup is moisturizing, which can reduce (and sometimes prevent) peeling. Using new makeup and clean brushes is a good way to prevent infection. Other harsh skincare products such as acne medication, scrubs or scented perfumes and moisturizers, should also be avoided during the first two weeks after your treatment.
4. Avoid Sun and Apply SPF
Direct sun exposure in the weeks following your treatment can slow down the healing process. Do your best to avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for at least 30 days. Sun exposure can also damage your healing skin, leading to dark or light spots, or even altering the texture of your skin. If sun exposure is unavoidable, apply an effective sunscreen of at least SPF 15 before outdoor activities and wear protective clothing.
5. Avoid Hot Water on Treatment Area
Avoid using hot water on the treatment area for two to three days following your treatment. Instead, you should cleanse the area twice a day using lukewarm water and a mild, unscented cleanser. Then use a clean towel to blot the area dry – don’t rub or scrub, especially if the treatment area is beginning to flake.
6. Avoid Exercise
Exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 48 hours after your session. Excessive sweating can carry bacteria to the treated skin, increasing the chance of infection. After that it’s fine to resume normal activities, as long as you make sure to keep the treatment area clean and moisturized directly after your workout.
Fractional Laser treatment is a convenient and non-invasive way to treat a variety of skin problems. Compared to other, more aggressive treatments, Fractional Laser actually has very few side effects and little downtime. The fractional approach allows for quick healing, while leaving your skin fully intact.
